What is ADHD? ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity/impulsivity disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that begins in childhood and is characterized by symptoms which may include poor attention span and concentration, lack of attention to details, easy distractibility, frequent loss or misplacement of items, disorganization, restlessness, fidgetiness, impulsiveness, and trouble staying seated (Roberts, Milich, & Barkely, 2015). There are three subtypes based on presenting pattern of symptoms: predominantly inattentive presentation, predominantly hyperactive presentation, and combined presentation. Impairing symptoms must present themselves prior to age 12 years and must be present in at least two settings (APA, 2013).

Research shows that ADHD symptoms can lead to grave impairment in school, work, and social settings; children with untreated ADHD are more likely to obtain less optimal educational and career achievement levels later in life (Barry, Lyman, & Klinger 2002). Adults with untreated ADHD are more likely to make work related errors; symptoms may also negatively impact productivity (Küpper et al., 2012). Hyperactive symptoms commonly lead to discipline referrals and reported conduct problems in school age children. Additionally, frequent disruptive behaviors may discourage peers from engaging with individuals who have been diagnosed with ADHD (Daley & Birchwood, 2010).

Although symptoms are impairing, multiple treatments have been identified that can help effectively manage or mitigate symptoms and improve overall functioning. These include stimulant medications and behavioral therapies. In addition, school accommodations (e.g., 504) can be put in place to provide supports to individuals in the learning environment.

With advancements in evidence-based assessment methods and interventions geared toward identifying and treating ADHD, waiting to pursue these will only delay you or your child getting the help needed. It is time to start living your best life today...a life anew!
